Famous Bulgarian Opera Singers

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

World-famous Bulgarian opera singers like Boris Hristov, Nikolay Gyaurov, Rayna Kabaivanska, Nikola Gyuzelev, Gena Dimitrova were born in the first half of the 20th century. They have made Bulgaria famous and have proved the world, that the Bulgarian nation gives birth to great people. And all that in hard times for the nation, times after a slavery that had lasted five centuries, which doomed the Bulgarians to poverty, ignorance. Several had known the art of the opera these days. The beginning was back in 1980, when three Bulgarian musicians organized the first opera group in Bulgaria, only 2 years after the Liberation. The group was disbanded by an edict in 1892. Pros and cons arguments about the Bulgarian opera turned into a three decade “war”. And as if the prophetical words of Petko Naumov in the “Den” newspaper /1908/ could be heard – “More self-confidence, skeptical gentlemen, more respect to the figures of music, who devoted themselves to a deed, that is going to make Bulgaria proud. ”

In 1922, the enthusiastic singers succeeded and won the debate.   A state opera had been built, named “The Nation’s Opera”. A fast opera boom had begun. And in spite of Bulgaria being behind the steel curtain of communism from 1944 till 1989, a time when Bulgarians were forbidden to go abroad to the capitalistic countries, the opera singers Boris Hristov, Nikolay Gyaurov, Rayna Kabaivanska, Nikola Gyuzelev, Gena Dimitrova became popular not only in Bulgaria, but worldwide. They had managed to impress the world with their art, skills and creativeness. Music does not oblige to separationism - that is what they proved to the world. All of them highlight their love to Bulgaria.

Boris Hristov (1914 – 1933), the great Bulgarian bass, was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, but had grown up in Sofia. He said: “All, that I have done, I have done in the name of my fatherland, Bulgaria!”.

Nikolay Gyaurov (1929 – 2005), a world-famous bass, was born in Velingrad, Bulgaria. He once said: “My art would matter, if it could show the foreigners, that our country has a respectable culture. That is why I always had the caption “Bulgaria” on the back of my clothes”.

Nikola Guyzelev was born in 1936 in Pavlikeni, Bulgaria. He has an artistic world-famous voice, which proves his Bulgarian identity.

Rayna Kabaivanska was born in 1934 in Bourgas, Gena Dimitrova was born in 1941 in Beglej village, the region of Pleven, Bulgaria, and passed away in 2005. Both of them have world-famous soprano voices. They  held classes, where they taught young talented Bulgarian opera singers.

Professor Hristo Brumbarov, who discovered Gena Dimitrova’s talent, said: “That is a voice, that appears one time in hundred years.”

It is said, that Nikolay Gyaurov is a genius, whose voice comes from the depths of the Earth, from the depths of the soul.

Rayna Kabaivanska sings with an exemplary voice and taste, with elegant and exemplary interpretation, with the charisma of a great singer.

Nikola Guyzelev, a singer and an actor with aristocratic figure, possesses a voice with a beautiful and noble timber.

These legendary opera singers, inheritors of Orpheus, have helped to improve the spiritual and cultural development of nations. Nowadays, these names seem to be forgotten by the young ones, who are being affected by the new styles of music. Nowadays, it is a pity that these great names are only mentioned in some art books and on anniversaries. Despite the ignorance of the young ones, these names are going to stay eternal.

Play Bob Marley Trivia

Bob Marley trivia is going to, simply put, be all about the music. His music has been thought by many to be among the most positive and uplifting music ever created, and is extremely popular throughout the world. An interesting fact is that in radio tests created for random listening experiences conducted worldwide, Bob Marley tested the highest amongst all musicians among random listeners for pure enjoyment of his music.

A Bob Marley quiz is obviously going to contain some questions about his record sales and his greatest hits. One good example of this type of information is how he has the most popular selling reggae album of all time, which has sold more than 20 million copies over the entire globe. The name of that album was “Legend” which was released posthumously. Some of his most well known songs include, “No Woman No Cry” “Redemption Song” and “I Shot the Sheriff”.

Bob Marley trivia should include facts about his early life. He comes from a very small town in Jamaica called Nine Mile. His name was Nesta Robert Marley at birth, and an error in paperwork later in life would place the Robert “Bob” as the first name instead of Nesta. Marley’s father was white, and as a result Marley was the target of racism in his younger years because of his mixed parentage, something that could make him the target of racism from both black and white social sectors.

Bob Marley’s band was known as “The Wailers” although most people don’t know that they went through many different names before they finally became the Wailers, ultimately making records under the name of “Bob Marley and the Wailers”. Before settling on that name they had been “The Teenagers” “The Wailing Rudeboys” “The Wailing Wailers” and “The Wailers” and the band was ultimately composed of Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh, although Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith were all former members of the group.

Religion was a very large part of Marley’s life, and he was a follower of the Rastafarian movement.  A large part of his life became devoted to the spread of this religion and through getting the music of the movement to the remote parts of Jamaica, as well as exposing it through his popularity to the music world at large.

Marley died in 1981 at only 36 years old from cancer.

O’Shea Jackson (born June 15, 1969), better known by his stage name Ice Cube is an African-American rapper, actor, screenwriter, and producer. He began his career as a member of the rap group N.W.A along with group leader Eazy-E, and later launched a successful solo career in music and cinema.
In 1992, he married Kimberly Woodruff, with whom he has four children, and converted to Islam. From the mid-1990s onwards, Cube focused on acting, and his musical output has slowed down considerably. He remains one of the most visible West Coast rappers, having helped originate gangsta rap.

Ice Cube was born O’Shea Jackson in South Central Los Angeles, California, where he was raised, the son of Doris (née Benjamin), a hospital clerk and custodian, and Andrew Jackson, who worked as a groundskeeper at California State University. His cousin is Teren Delvon Jones, also known as Del
tha Funkee Homosapien, of Deltron 3030, Gorillaz and Hieroglyphics. At age sixteen, Ice Cube developed an interest in hip hop music, and began writing raps in Taft High School’s keyboarding class. He attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology in the fall of 1987, and studied Architectural Drafting. With friend
Sir Jinx, Cube formed the C.I.A., and they performed at parties hosted by Dr. Dre. In an interview with well-known British broadsheet newspaper, The Guardian, Ice Cube stated he is a Muslim, having converted sometime in the 1990s.

In 1987 Cube and Dr. Dre released the EP My Posse, under the alias CIA and the county police. After the collaboration, Cube showed Eazy-E the lyrics to “Boyz-n-the-Hood”. Eazy-E, although initially rejecting the lyrics, eventually recorded the song for N.W.A. and the Posse, the debut album for the group N.W.A (short for Niggaz With Attitude) that included him, Cube, Dre, and other rappers MC Ren and DJ Yella.

Recent years: In 2004, his hit singles “Check Yo Self”, “It Was a Good Day” and affiliated song “Guerrillas in tha Mist” with Da Lench Mob appeared on popular video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas playing on fictional radio stations.

In late 2005, Ice Cube and Emmy Award winning film maker R. J. Cutler, teamed up to create the six-part documentary series titled Black. White., which was broadcast on cable network FX. In May 2006 Ice Cube accused Oprah Winfrey of not welcoming rappers on her show, and specifically, for not inviting him to the show when the rest of the cast of films that he participated in were invited. Cube’s other movie projects include Teacher of the Year, released in 2007, and “The Extractors”, released in 2008. Happy Birthday, Judy Garland!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

It is former superstar singer and actress Judy Garland’s birthday today!

Through a career that spanned 45 of her 47 years, Garland attained international stardom as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist and on the concert stage. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award, won a Golden Globe Award, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her work in films, as well as Grammy Awards and a Tony Award. She had a contralto singing range.

Judy Garland (born Frances Ethel Gumm, June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969) was a truly amazing talent.  But Despite her professional triumphs, Garland battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her
feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and overweight. Plied with drugs to control her weight and increase her productivity, Garland endured a decades-long struggle with addiction. Garland
was plagued by financial instability, often owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, and her first four of five marriages ended in divorce. She attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Garland died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of forty-seven, leaving children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft.

In 1997, Garland was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 1999, the American Film Institute placed her among the ten greatest female stars in the history of American cinema.

Garland landed the lead role of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939) at the age of sixteen, in which she introduced the song with which she would forever be identified, “Over the Rainbow”. Although producers Arthur Freed and Mervyn LeRoy had wanted Garland from the start, studio chief Mayer tried first to borrow Shirley Temple from 20th Century Fox. Temple’s services were denied and Garland was cast.

Judy Garland’s legacy as a performer and a personality has endured long after her death. The American Film Institute named Garland eighth among the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.

Of particular note is Garland’s status as a gay icon. She always had a large base of fans in the gay community. Reasons often given for her standing, especially  amongst gay men, are admiration of her ability as a performer, the
way her personal struggles supposedly mirrored those of gay men in America during the height of her fame and her value as a camp figure.
